About Huddersfield: A huge and historic market town situated in the English county of West Yorkshire, In the United Kingdom, Huddersfield today is the United Kingdom's 11th largest town, being home to a population of somewhere near 168,000. The town of Huddersfield is positioned about halfway between the cities of Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles south-west of Leeds and 28 miles north-east of Manchester and is approximately 191 miles driving distance from London.

Huddersfield is the administrative centre of the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the biggest town in this borough. Huddersfield lies in the valleys of the River Holme and the River Colne and these two rivers meet to the south of the town near the University.

Huddersfield is a predominantly industrial area, recognized over the centuries for the manufacture and production of textiles, sheet metal, wool, electric motors and chemicals. The town was the scene of much unrest and violence at the time of the Industrial Revolution when the Luddites, afraid of losing their livelihood due to increased mechanisation, demolished machinery and mills and in some cases even killed textile mill owners. In spite of the predominance or manufacturing and industry the biggest employer in the town these days is the University.

The Huddersfield area has been the site of settlements for upwards of 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and progressing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack. Huddersfied was documented in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was identified as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The town has a long tradition of sporting excellence and is where Rugby League was born, which came into being at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU. In the same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded a few years later in 1908 and is currently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 and also won 3 successive league titles (1923-26).

The area has been the birthplace of several well known Huddersfield including the likes of actor James Mason, former PM Harold Wilson, Derek Ibbotson and Chris Balderstone (footballer and cricketer).
