About Huddersfield: An enormous and historic market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, UK, Huddersfield is presently the United Kingdom's 11th largest town, being home to a population of approximately 168,000 (2017). The town of Huddersfield is placed about halfway between Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and it is 191 miles distance from London.

Huddersfield is part of the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the largest settlement in the borough. It sits in the valleys of the River Holme and the River Colne and these two rivers meet to the south of the town close to the University.

Huddersfield is a predominantly industrial town, well known over the years for the manufacturing of textiles, chemicals, electric motors, sheet metal and wool. It was the scene of some unrest during the Industrial Revolution when a group of textile workers called the Luddites, faced with losing their livelihood owing to the march of mechanisation, destroyed weaving machinery and mills and even went to the extreme of attacking and murdering textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Despite the predominance or manufacturing the biggest employer in Huddersfield today is the University.

The area has been the site of settlements for upwards of 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and progressing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane). Huddersfied was documented in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

Huddersfield has a long tradition with regards to sports and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which occurred at the George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU in a dispute over the payment of players. Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and presently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town won the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and were the first English club to win 3 successive league titles in 1924,25 and 26).

The area has been the birthplace of numerous well known Huddersfield such as James Mason, former PM Harold Wilson, cricketer and footballer Chris Balderstone and Derek Ibbotson (athlete).
