Huddersfied was mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was referred to as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The town has a proud tradition with regards to sports and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at the George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs split from the RFU in a disagreement over payments to players. Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded 13 years later in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and were the first English club to win 3 successive league titles.

The town has been the birthplace of numerous noteworthy Huddersfield including James Mason, Chris Balderstone (footballer and cricketer), Harold Wilson and athlete Derek Ibbotson.
