About Huddersfield: A historic and large market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, United Kingdom, Huddersfield is presently the 11th largest town in the UK, being home to a population in excess of 168,000 (2017). The town is positioned halfway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and is 191 miles driving distance from London.

Huddersfield is within the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the most populous town in the borough. Huddersfield lies in the valleys of the rivers Holme and Colne and the confluence of these two rivers is just to the south of the town close to the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a primarily industrial area, widely known over the years for the manufacture of textiles, sheet metal, chemicals, electric motors and wool. Huddersfield was the scene of significant violence and unrest during the Industrial Revolution when Luddites, fearing the loss of their livelihood as a consequence of more and more mechanization, destroyed weaving machinery and mills and in some cases even attacked textile mill owners. Despite the predominance or manufacturing and industry the biggest employer in Huddersfield today is the University.

Huddersfield has been the site of settlements for upwards of 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane). Huddersfied was listed in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was identified as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

Huddersfield has a long sporting tradition and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which happened at Huddersfield's George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded some years later in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and were also famous for winning 3 successive league titles in the 1920's.
