About Huddersfield: A huge and historic market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, In the United Kingdom, Huddersfield is presently the United Kingdom's 11th largest town, housing a population of close to 168,000. The town of Huddersfield is placed midway between the cities of Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and it is 191 miles from London.

Huddersfield is the administrative centre of the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the largest urban settlement in this borough. Huddersfield sits in the valleys of 2 rivers, the Holme and Colne and these two rivers meet to the south of the town near to the University.

Huddersfield is a primarily industrial area, renowned over the centuries for the production and manufacture of sheet metal, chemicals, electric motors, textiles and wool. The town was the scene of some unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group known as the Luddites, in fear of losing their livelihood thanks to more and more mechanization, damaged machinery and mills and even went as far as attacking and murdering mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Despite the predominance or manufacturing and industry the largest employer in the town today is the University.

Huddersfield has been the site of settlements for over 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack. Huddersfied was documented in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was identified as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The town has a long tradition of sporting excellence and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which occurred at Huddersfield's George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU. In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded a few years later in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (1-0 against Preston North End) and were also famous for winning 3 successive league titles (1923-26).
