Huddersfield a Brief Guide: An immense and historic market town situated in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the UK, Huddersfield is at present the UK's eleventh largest town, being home to a population of somewhere near 168,000. The town of Huddersfield is positioned midway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and is about 190 miles distance from London.

Huddersfield is within the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the largest settlement in that borough. Huddersfield lies in the valleys of the River Colne and the River Holme and these two rivers meet to the south of the town close to the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a chiefly industrial area, famous over the years for the manufacture of chemicals, wool, textiles, electric motors and sheet metal. Huddersfield was the scene of much unrest during the Industrial Revolution when the Luddites, in fear of losing their jobs thanks to more and more mechanization, destroyed mills and their machines and even went as far as killing textile mill owners. Despite the predominance or manufacturing and industry the largest employer in Huddersfield at present is the University.

Huddersfield has been the site of settlements for more than 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane) and an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was noted in the Domesday Book (written in 1086) where it was referred to as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

Huddersfield has a proud tradition for sport and is where Rugby League was born, which came into being at the George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs split from the RFU in a disagreement over the payment of players. The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded a few years later in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and also won 3 successive league titles (1923-1926).

The Huddersfield area has been the birthplace of quite a few prominent Huddersfield including James Mason, Chris Balderstone, Derek Ibbotson (athlete) and former PM Harold Wilson.
