About Huddersfield: An immense and historic market town situated in the English county of West Yorkshire, UK, Huddersfield is presently the UK's 11th largest town, being home to a population of approximately 168,000 (2017). Huddersfield is positioned halfway between the cities of Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and is approximately 191 miles from London.

Huddersfield is the administrative centre of the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the largest settlement in that borough. Huddersfield lies in the valleys of 2 rivers, the Holme and Colne and the confluence of these two rivers is to the south of the town adjacent to the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a mainly industrial town, widely known over the years for the production of textiles, sheet metal, wool, electric motors and chemicals. Huddersfield was the scene of much unrest and violence at the time of the Industrial Revolution when the Luddites, in fear of losing their jobs on account of increasing mechanisation, wrecked mills and their machines and even attacked textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Despite the predominance or industry the largest employer in Huddersfield at present is the University.

The Huddersfield area has been settled for more than four thousand years, beginning with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane). Huddersfied was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was identified as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The town has a proud tradition in relation to sports and is where Rugby League was born, which came into being at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the Rugby Football Union in a row over payments to players. Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and currently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), they won the FA Cup in 1922 (1-0 against Preston North End) and were the first English club to win 3 successive league titles (1923-1926).

The town has been the birthplace of quite a few famous Huddersfield including the likes of former PM Harold Wilson, Chris Balderstone, movie actor James Mason and athlete Derek Ibbotson.
