Huddersfield a Potted Guide: An immense and historic market town situated in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the United Kingdom, Huddersfield is presently the UK's 11th largest town, boasting a population in excess of 168,000 (2017). The town is placed roughly midway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and is some 190 miles driving distance from London.

Huddersfield is included in the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the largest settlement in that borough. It stands in the valleys of two rivers, the River Colne and the River Holme and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town near the University.

Huddersfield is a primarily industrial town, widely known over the years for the production of chemicals, wool, textiles, electric motors and sheet metal. It was the scene of some unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group of textile workers called the Luddites, fearing the loss of their livelihood as a consequence of greater mechanisation, demolished mills and machinery and in some cases even attacked and murdered mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. In spite of the predominance or industry the largest employer in the town today is the University.

The area has been settled for upwards of 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane). Huddersfied was recorded in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a long sporting tradition and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which occurred at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the Rugby Football Union in a disagreement over payments to players. Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded 13 years later in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town won the FA Cup in 1922 (at Stamford Bridge) and were also famous for winning 3 successive league titles in the 1920's.
