Huddersfield has a long sporting tradition and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which occurred at the George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs split from the RFU. Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded 13 years later in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), they won the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and also won 3 successive league titles in the 1920's.
