Huddersfield a Short Guide: A historic and large market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, In the UK, Huddersfield is actually the UK's 11th largest town, being home to a population in excess of 168,000. The town is positioned midway between the cities of Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and it is 191 miles driving distance from London.

Huddersfield is included in the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the most populous town in the borough. It sits in the valleys of the River Holme and the River Colne and these two rivers meet to the south of the town near the University.

Huddersfield is a largely industrial town, recognized over the centuries for the manufacture of textiles, wool, chemicals, electric motors and sheet metal. The town was the scene of considerable unrest and violence during the Industrial Revolution when Luddites, faced with losing their jobs because of ever increasing mechanisation, demolished machines and mills and even went as far as murdering textile mill owners. Despite the predominance or industry the biggest employer in Huddersfield today is the University.

The Huddersfield area has been the site of settlements for more than 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane). Huddersfied was recorded in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was called Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The town has a long tradition in relation to sports and is where Rugby League was born, which took place at the George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU. Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded 13 years later in 1908 and is currently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and were the first English club to win three league titles on the trot.
