Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane). Huddersfied was mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was identified as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a long tradition of sporting excellence and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which took place at the George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs split from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded soon after in 1908 and currently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield won the FA Cup in 1922 and were also famous for winning three successive league titles in the 1920's.

The area has been the birthplace of a number of well known Huddersfield including the likes of former PM Harold Wilson, Chris Balderstone (footballer and cricketer), athlete Derek Ibbotson and James Mason.
