Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack and a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was noted in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was identified as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

Huddersfield has a long tradition with regards to sports and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which happened at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the RFU in a bitter row over players being paid. In the same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded a few years later in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), they were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (1-0 against Preston North End) and were the first English club to win 3 league titles on the trot.
