The town has a long tradition with regards to sports and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at Huddersfield's George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs split from the RFU in a dispute over players being paid. Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded soon after in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 and three successive league titles in the 1920's.
