Huddersfield is a mainly industrial town, widely known over the years for the manufacture and production of chemicals, sheet metal, wool, textiles and electric motors. Huddersfield was the scene of some violent unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group of weavers known as the Luddites, in fear of losing their jobs as a consequence of the threat of mechanisation, wrecked mills and weaving machinery and in some cases even attacked mill owners. Huddersfied was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a proud tradition of sporting excellence and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the Rugby Football Union in a row over players being paid. In the same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and presently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and also won 3 successive league titles.
