Huddersfield is a largely industrial town, renowned over the centuries for the production of chemicals, sheet metal, textiles, electric motors and wool. Huddersfield was the scene of much unrest and violence during the Industrial Revolution when a group of textile workers called the Luddites, fearing the loss of their jobs as a consequence of the march of mechanisation, demolished machinery and mills and even went to the extreme of attacking and murdering mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Regardless of the predominance or industry the biggest employer in Huddersfield at present is the University.

Huddersfied was documented in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a proud tradition of sporting excellence and is where Rugby League was born, which happened at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the Rugby Football Union in a dispute over the payment of players. Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded a few years later in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), they were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and were the first English club to win 3 successive league titles in the 1920's.
