Review of Huddersfield: A historic and large market town situated in the county of West Yorkshire, England, UK, Huddersfield is actually the 11th largest town (not including cities) in the United Kingdom, having a population of about 168,000 (2017). The town is positioned about halfway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles south-west of Leeds and is about 191 miles from London.

Huddersfield is within the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the most populous settlement in this borough. It sits in the valleys of 2 rivers, the River Holme and the River Colne and the confluence of these two rivers is to the south of the town near the University.

Huddersfield is a largely industrial area, renowned over the centuries for the manufacturing of chemicals, textiles, electric motors, wool and sheet metal. Huddersfield was the scene of considerable unrest and violence during the Industrial Revolution when Luddites, fearful of losing their livelihood as a consequence of ever increasing mechanisation, damaged mills and their machines and even killed mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Despite the predominance or manufacturing the largest employer in Huddersfield these days is the University.

Huddersfield has been the site of settlements for more than four thousand years, starting with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane) and a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was listed in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a long tradition with regards to sports and is where Rugby League was born, which took place at Huddersfield's George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded soon after in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), they won the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and were also famous for winning 3 successive league titles in the 1920's.

Huddersfield has been the birthplace of numerous prominent Huddersfield including film actor James Mason, former Prime Minister Harold Wilson, Chris Balderstone (footballer and cricketer) and athlete Derek Ibbotson.
