About Huddersfield: A historic and huge market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, In the UK, Huddersfield at the current time is the United Kingdom's eleventh largest town, boasting a population of around 168,000 (2017). The town is placed midway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and is approximately 191 miles from London.

Huddersfield is part of the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the most populous town in the borough. It sits in the valleys of 2 rivers, the River Holme and the River Colne and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town near the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a mainly industrial area, renowned over the years for the manufacture of wool, textiles, electric motors, sheet metal and chemicals. The town was the scene of much violence and unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group of textile workers known as the Luddites, scared of losing their jobs as a result of the march of mechanization, demolished machines and mills and even murdered textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Despite the predominance or manufacturing the biggest employer in the town today is the University.

The area has been the site of settlements for over 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack. Huddersfied was noted in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was referred to as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a proud tradition with regards to sports and is where Rugby League was born, which occurred at Huddersfield's George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU in a bitter dispute over players being paid. The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded later in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (at Stamford Bridge) and also won three successive league titles in the 1920's.

Huddersfield has been the birthplace of a number of notable Huddersfield such as Chris Balderstone, film actor James Mason, Derek Ibbotson and Harold Wilson (PM).
