About Huddersfield: A historic and large market town situated in the English county of West Yorkshire, UK, Huddersfield is at present the UK's 11th largest town (not including cities), boasting a population of somewhere near 168,000. The town is positioned roughly midway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and it is some 191 miles distance from London.

Huddersfield is the administrative centre for the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the largest settlement in the borough. It sits in the valleys of the rivers Holme and Colne and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town near the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a mainly industrial town, renowned over the years for the manufacture and production of chemicals, textiles, sheet metal, electric motors and wool. It was the scene of significant unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group called the Luddites, fearful of losing their livelihood because of ever increasing mechanisation, demolished machines and mills and even went as far as murdering mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Regardless of the predominance or industry and manufacturing the biggest employer in the town these days is the University.

The Huddersfield area has been the site of settlements for more than four thousand years, beginning with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane). Huddersfied was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a long tradition for sport and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which occurred at Huddersfield's George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs split from the Rugby Football Union in a dispute over payments to players. In the same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and is currently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 and were also famous for winning 3 successive league titles.
