Review of Huddersfield: An immense and historic market town situated in the county of West Yorkshire, England, UK, Huddersfield today is the United Kingdom's 11th largest town (not including cities), boasting a population in excess of 168,000 (2017). Huddersfield is positioned about halfway between the cities of Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and it is 191 miles driving distance from London.

Huddersfield is within the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the most populous settlement in this borough. It stands in the valleys of two rivers, the River Colne and the River Holme and the confluence of these two rivers is to the south of the town near to the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a mostly industrial area, well known over the years for the manufacture of chemicals, electric motors, sheet metal, wool and textiles. The town was the scene of much violence and unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when Luddites, fearing the loss of their jobs thanks to increased mechanization, demolished machines and mills and even attacked mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Despite the predominance or manufacturing and industry the biggest employer in the town these days is the University.

The area has been settled for over four thousand years, beginning with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane) and an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was noted in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a proud tradition for sport and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which occurred at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs split from the Rugby Football Union in a row over players being paid. Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded later in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town won the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and also won three successive league titles in the 1920's.
