Huddersfield a Potted Guide: An enormous and historic market town situated in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the United Kingdom, Huddersfield today is the UK's 11th largest town, having a population in excess of 168,000 (2017). The town is placed midway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and it is some 191 miles distance from London.

Huddersfield is included in the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the most populous town in the borough. It lies in the valleys of the River Holme and the River Colne and these two rivers meet to the south of the town close to the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a chiefly industrial town, famous over the centuries for the manufacture and production of chemicals, textiles, wool, electric motors and sheet metal. The town was the scene of significant unrest and violence at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group of textile workers known as the Luddites, in fear of losing their jobs because of more and more mechanization, demolished mills and weaving machinery and even attacked and murdered mill owners. Huddersfield has been the site of settlements for over four thousand years, beginning with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane) and an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was documented in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was called Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a proud tradition for sport and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which took place at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU. The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 and were the first English club to win 3 successive league titles (1923-1926).
