Huddersfield a Potted History: A historic and huge market town situated in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the United Kingdom, Huddersfield today is the eleventh largest town in the United Kingdom, having a population in excess of 168,000 (2017). Huddersfield is positioned about halfway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles south-west of Leeds and is about 190 miles driving distance from London.

Huddersfield is within the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the most populous settlement in the borough. Huddersfield lies in the valleys of two rivers, the River Holme and the River Colne and these two rivers meet to the south of the town near the University.

Huddersfield is a largely industrial town, renowned over the years for the manufacture and production of electric motors, sheet metal, textiles, wool and chemicals. The town was the scene of some violent unrest during the Industrial Revolution when a group called the Luddites, faced with losing their livelihood because of the march of mechanization, damaged mills and their machines and in some cases even attacked and murdered mill owners. In spite of the predominance or manufacturing the largest employer in the town these days is the University.

The Huddersfield area has been the site of settlements for over 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane). Huddersfied was documented in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was called Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The town has a proud sporting tradition and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs split from the RFU. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded soon after in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (1-0 against Preston North End) and also won three successive league titles in the 1920's.

The area has been the birthplace of various prominent Huddersfield including the likes of athlete Derek Ibbotson, Chris Balderstone, James Mason and Harold Wilson.
