About Huddersfield: A historic and large market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom, Huddersfield is actually the United Kingdom's 11th largest town, having a population of approximately 168,000 (2017). The town is placed about halfway between the cities of Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles north-east of Manchester and is some 190 miles from London.

Huddersfield is within the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the most populous settlement in that borough. Huddersfield sits in the valleys of the rivers Colne and Holme and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town close to the University.

Huddersfield is a chiefly industrial town, well known over the centuries for the production of chemicals, sheet metal, wool, textiles and electric motors. Huddersfield was the scene of much unrest and violence during the Industrial Revolution when a group known as the Luddites, fearful of losing their livelihood as a result of increasing mechanization, destroyed weaving machinery and mills and even attacked and killed textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. In spite of the predominance or manufacturing and industry the biggest employer in Huddersfield nowadays is the University.

The Huddersfield area has been the site of settlements for over four thousand years, starting with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane). Huddersfied was documented in the Domesday Book (written in 1086) where it was identified as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

Huddersfield has a proud tradition with regards to sports and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which took place at the George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU in a disagreement over the payment of players. In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded later in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and three successive league titles (1923-24, 1924-25 and 1925-26).

The area has been the birthplace of numerous notable Huddersfield including the likes of athlete Derek Ibbotson, former PM Harold Wilson, James Mason and Chris Balderstone.
