About Huddersfield: A historic and large market town situated in the county of West Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom, Huddersfield is currently the 11th largest town in the United Kingdom, having a population of close to 168,000. Huddersfield is positioned about halfway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and it is approximately 191 miles away from London.

Huddersfield is the administrative centre of the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the largest urban settlement in that borough. Huddersfield lies in the valleys of two rivers, the River Holme and the River Colne and these two rivers meet to the south of the town close to the University.

Huddersfield is a largely industrial town, recognized over the centuries for the manufacture of chemicals, electric motors, sheet metal, wool and textiles. The town was the scene of some unrest during the Industrial Revolution when the Luddites, fearing the loss of their jobs as a consequence of the march of mechanisation, wrecked weaving machinery and mills and even killed textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. In spite of the predominance or industry and manufacturing the biggest employer in Huddersfield these days is the University.

Huddersfield has been the site of settlements for over 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack and an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was referred to as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

Huddersfield has a proud tradition for sport and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which took place at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs split from the RFU. Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded soon after in 1908 and currently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town won the FA Cup in 1922 (1-0 against Preston North End) and were also famous for winning 3 league titles on the trot.
