The town is positioned roughly midway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and it is approximately 190 miles drive from London.

Huddersfield is a predominantly industrial town, widely known over the years for the manufacture of chemicals, electric motors, sheet metal, textiles and wool. It was the scene of much violence and unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group known as the Luddites, in fear of losing their livelihood on account of more and more mechanization, wrecked mills and weaving machinery and even went to the extreme of killing textile mill owners. In spite of the predominance or industry the biggest employer in the town today is the University.

The area has been the site of settlements for more than four thousand years, starting with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane) and an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was recorded in the Domesday Book (written in 1086) where it was identified as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a long tradition of sporting excellence and is where Rugby League was born, which came into being at the George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the Rugby Football Union in a row over the payment of players. In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded soon after in 1908 and currently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (1-0 against Preston North End) and three successive league titles.

The town has been the birthplace of many well known Huddersfield including athlete Derek Ibbotson, former Prime Minister Harold Wilson, James Mason and cricketer and footballer Chris Balderstone.
