About Huddersfield: A very large and historic market town situated in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the United Kingdom, Huddersfield today is the UK's eleventh largest town, boasting a population of about 168,000. The town is positioned about halfway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and it is about 191 miles drive from London.

Huddersfield is within the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the largest urban area in that borough. It stands in the valleys of the rivers Holme and Colne and these two rivers meet to the south of the town near to the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a largely industrial town, renowned over the centuries for the manufacturing of wool, chemicals, electric motors, textiles and sheet metal. It was the scene of significant unrest and violence at the time of the Industrial Revolution when the Luddites, fearful of losing their livelihood as a consequence of greater mechanization, demolished mills and their machines and even went as far as killing mill owners. Huddersfied was mentioned in the Domesday Book (written in 1086) where it was referred to as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

Huddersfield has a proud tradition for sport and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at the George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). In the same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded later in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and 3 successive league titles (1923-1926).
