About Huddersfield: An enormous and historic market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, United Kingdom, Huddersfield at the current time is the 11th largest town (not including cities) in the United Kingdom, having a population of just over 168,000 (2017). The town is positioned midway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles south-west of Leeds and it is about 191 miles away from London.

Huddersfield is included in the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the most populous settlement in this borough. Huddersfield is a largely industrial town, recognized over the years for the production and manufacture of textiles, sheet metal, wool, electric motors and chemicals. Huddersfield was the scene of some unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when Luddites, in fear of losing their jobs on account of the threat of mechanisation, damaged machinery and mills and in some cases even murdered textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Despite the predominance or industry the biggest employer in the town these days is the University.

Huddersfield has been the site of settlements for upwards of 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane) and a hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was listed in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was referred to as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a long tradition for sport and is where Rugby League was born, which took place at the George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs split from the RFU in a disagreement over the payment of players. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded later in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), they were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 (at Stamford Bridge) and also won three successive league titles in the 1920's.

The town has been the birthplace of many noteworthy Huddersfield such as Chris Balderstone (footballer and cricketer), athlete Derek Ibbotson, Harold Wilson and James Mason.
