Huddersfield a Short Guide: A historic and huge market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the United Kingdom, Huddersfield today is the United Kingdom's eleventh largest town, housing a population of just over 168,000. The town is placed midway between Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles south-west of Leeds and 28 miles north-east of Manchester and it is about 191 miles drive from London.

Huddersfield is the administrative centre for the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the largest urban settlement in this borough. It sits in the valleys of two rivers, the River Colne and the River Holme and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town close to the University.

Huddersfield is a mostly industrial area, recognized over the years for the manufacture of chemicals, textiles, wool, electric motors and sheet metal. It was the scene of much violence and unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when Luddites, fearing the loss of their jobs because of increased mechanisation, wrecked mills and weaving machinery and even killed mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Despite the predominance or manufacturing and industry the largest employer in the town these days is the University.

Huddersfield has been settled for over four thousand years, beginning with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane). Huddersfied was mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was referred to as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a long tradition for sport and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which happened at Huddersfield's George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the RFU. The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded 13 years later in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 and three successive league titles in 1924,25 and 26).

Huddersfield has been the birthplace of numerous notable Huddersfield including Hollywood actor James Mason, footballer and cricketer Chris Balderstone, athlete Derek Ibbotson and former Prime Minister Harold Wilson.
