About Huddersfield: An immense and historic market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the UK, Huddersfield is at present the UK's 11th largest town, being home to a population of approximately 168,000 (2017). The town of Huddersfield is positioned roughly halfway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and is approximately 191 miles distance from London.

Huddersfield is within the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the most populous town in this borough. It lies in the valleys of the River Holme and the River Colne and the confluence of these two rivers is just to the south of the town near to the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a chiefly industrial area, well known over the years for the production and manufacture of chemicals, textiles, wool, electric motors and sheet metal. Huddersfield was the scene of much violence and unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when the Luddites, fearing the loss of their livelihood as a consequence of more and more mechanisation, demolished mills and their machines and even attacked mill owners. Despite the predominance or industry the biggest employer in the town at present is the University.

The area has been the site of settlements for over 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane) and an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was listed in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was referred to as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

Huddersfield has a long tradition for sport and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at Huddersfield's George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). In the same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded 13 years later in 1908 and currently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), they were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and three successive league titles (1923-1926).

The Huddersfield area has been the birthplace of numerous famous Huddersfield including the likes of footballer and cricketer Chris Balderstone, former PM Harold Wilson, film actor James Mason and Derek Ibbotson.
