Review of Huddersfield: A very large and historic market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the United Kingdom, Huddersfield at the current time is the United Kingdom's eleventh largest town, housing a population of about 168,000 (2017). The town of Huddersfield is placed roughly halfway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and is 191 miles drive from London.

Huddersfield is the administrative centre of the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the most populous town in this borough. It sits in the valleys of 2 rivers, the Colne and Holme and these two rivers meet to the south of the town beside the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a largely industrial area, renowned over the centuries for the manufacture and production of electric motors, chemicals, sheet metal, wool and textiles. It was the scene of significant unrest and violence during the Industrial Revolution when Luddites, fearful of losing their livelihood due to more and more mechanization, wrecked machines and mills and even went to the extreme of murdering mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Regardless of the predominance or industry and manufacturing the largest employer in Huddersfield nowadays is the University.

The Huddersfield area has been settled for more than four thousand years, beginning with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane) and a hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was called Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The town has a long sporting tradition and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at Huddersfield's George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU. In the same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded some years later in 1908 and currently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (1-0 against Preston North End) and 3 successive league titles.

The area has been the birthplace of quite a few prominent Huddersfield including actor James Mason, Harold Wilson (PM), Chris Balderstone and athlete Derek Ibbotson.
