About Huddersfield: A large and historic market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, UK, Huddersfield is currently the UK's eleventh largest town, boasting a population of just over 168,000. Huddersfield is positioned halfway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles south-west of Leeds and is approximately 190 miles from London.

Huddersfield is within the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the biggest town in the borough. It lies in the valleys of 2 rivers, the River Holme and the River Colne and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town beside the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a primarily industrial town, famous over the centuries for the manufacturing of textiles, sheet metal, wool, electric motors and chemicals. The Huddersfield area has been settled for upwards of 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane). Huddersfied was recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was referred to as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a long tradition for sport and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which happened at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU in a bitter row over payments to players. The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded later in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), they were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and were the first English club to win 3 successive league titles in the 1920's.

The town has been the birthplace of many notable Huddersfield including film actor James Mason, Harold Wilson, cricketer and footballer Chris Balderstone and Derek Ibbotson (athlete).
