Review of Huddersfield: A large and historic market town situated in the English county of West Yorkshire, UK, Huddersfield today is the eleventh largest town in the United Kingdom, boasting a population of around 168,000 (2017). The town of Huddersfield is positioned midway between the cities of Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles north-east of Manchester and it is 190 miles away from London.

Huddersfield is included in the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the largest settlement in that borough. It sits in the valleys of 2 rivers, the River Colne and the River Holme and the confluence of these two rivers is to the south of the town beside the University.

Huddersfield is a predominantly industrial area, well known over the years for the production and manufacture of chemicals, sheet metal, textiles, electric motors and wool. The town was the scene of some violent unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group called the Luddites, in fear of losing their jobs owing to the threat of mechanization, wrecked machinery and mills and even went as far as killing mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Regardless of the predominance or manufacturing the largest employer in Huddersfield at present is the University.

Huddersfield has been settled for more than four thousand years, starting with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane) and a hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was documented in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was identified as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The town has a long sporting tradition and is where Rugby League was born, which came into being at the George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs split from the RFU in a bitter dispute over the payment of players. Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded later in 1908 and presently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), they won the FA Cup in 1922 (1-0 against Preston North End) and were the first English club to win three successive league titles in the 1920's.

The area has been the birthplace of many prominent Huddersfield including the likes of James Mason, Chris Balderstone, former PM Harold Wilson and Derek Ibbotson (athlete).
