About Huddersfield: A historic and large market town situated in the county of West Yorkshire, England, UK, Huddersfield is presently the UK's 11th largest town, boasting a population of just over 168,000. The town is positioned midway between Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles north-east of Manchester and is approximately 190 miles drive from London.

Huddersfield is included in the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the biggest town in this borough. It sits in the valleys of the rivers Colne and Holme and the confluence of these two rivers is just to the south of the town adjacent to the University.

Huddersfield is a chiefly industrial town, recognized over the years for the production of textiles, sheet metal, chemicals, electric motors and wool. The town was the scene of some violent unrest during the Industrial Revolution when a group of weavers known as the Luddites, in fear of losing their livelihood thanks to increased mechanisation, wrecked mills and machinery and even went as far as attacking and killing textile mill owners. Regardless of the predominance or manufacturing and industry the biggest employer in Huddersfield today is the University.

The area has been the site of settlements for over 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane). Huddersfied was listed in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was identified as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

Huddersfield has a long tradition in relation to sport and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the Rugby Football Union in a row over the payment of players. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and presently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town won the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and also won three successive league titles (1923-24, 1924-25 and 1925-26).

The town has been the birthplace of numerous famous Huddersfield including the likes of Hollywood actor James Mason, Chris Balderstone (footballer and cricketer), Harold Wilson and Derek Ibbotson (athlete).
