The town has a long tradition with regards to sports and is where Rugby League was born, which took place at Huddersfield's George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded 13 years later in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), they were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 and were the first English club to win three successive league titles in the 1920's.

The town has been the birthplace of a number of notable Huddersfield including the likes of Chris Balderstone, James Mason, Derek Ibbotson and former Prime Minister Harold Wilson.
