Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane). Huddersfied was mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was called Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a long tradition with regards to sports and is where Rugby League was born, which happened at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs split from the RFU in a dispute over the payment of players. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded soon after in 1908 and currently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), they were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 and also won three successive league titles.
