About Huddersfield: A historic and large market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, UK, Huddersfield is at present the UK's 11th largest town, housing a population of about 168,000. The town of Huddersfield is positioned about midway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and is some 191 miles from London.

Huddersfield is included in the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the largest urban settlement in this borough. Huddersfield sits in the valleys of two rivers, the River Colne and the River Holme and the confluence of these 2 rivers is just to the south of the town near the University.

Huddersfield is a predominantly industrial town, well known over the centuries for the manufacture of sheet metal, textiles, wool, electric motors and chemicals. Huddersfield was the scene of significant violence and unrest during the Industrial Revolution when a group of textile workers known as the Luddites, scared of losing their livelihood thanks to greater mechanization, damaged mills and their machines and even went to the extreme of killing textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. In spite of the predominance or manufacturing the largest employer in the town at present is the University.

The area has been settled for over 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack. Huddersfied was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

Huddersfield has a long tradition in relation to sports and is where Rugby League was born, which occurred at Huddersfield's George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU. In the same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded 13 years later in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), they were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (1-0 against Preston North End) and three successive league titles (1923-24, 1924-25 and 1925-26).
