About Huddersfield: A historic and large market town situated in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the UK, Huddersfield is actually the United Kingdom's eleventh largest town (not including cities), housing a population of close to 168,000. Huddersfield is placed roughly midway between Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and is 190 miles driving distance from London.

Huddersfield is the administrative centre of the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the largest town in that borough. Huddersfield sits in the valleys of the rivers Colne and Holme and these two rivers meet to the south of the town beside the University.

Huddersfield is a mostly industrial town, widely known over the centuries for the production and manufacture of chemicals, textiles, sheet metal, wool and electric motors. It was the scene of significant unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when the Luddites, fearing the loss of their jobs as a consequence of greater mechanization, destroyed machines and mills and in some cases even killed textile mill owners. In spite of the predominance or industry and manufacturing the biggest employer in the town today is the University.

The area has been settled for over 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane) and an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was documented in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was called Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a long sporting tradition and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which occurred at the George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded later in 1908 and is currently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 and also won three successive league titles.

The town has been the birthplace of many prominent Huddersfield including Chris Balderstone, Hollywood actor James Mason, former Prime Minister Harold Wilson and Derek Ibbotson.
