Review of Huddersfield: An immense and historic market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, UK, Huddersfield is presently the United Kingdom's eleventh largest town, being home to a population in excess of 168,000 (2017). Huddersfield is placed roughly midway between Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and it is some 191 miles from London.

Huddersfield is within the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the largest urban area in that borough. Huddersfield stands in the valleys of the rivers Colne and Holme and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town near to the University.

Huddersfield is a primarily industrial town, recognized over the centuries for the manufacture of textiles, sheet metal, chemicals, electric motors and wool. The town was the scene of significant unrest and violence during the Industrial Revolution when Luddites, faced with losing their livelihood because of increased mechanization, demolished weaving machinery and mills and in some cases even attacked textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Regardless of the predominance or industry and manufacturing the largest employer in Huddersfield nowadays is the University.

The area has been the site of settlements for over 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane) and a hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was documented in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a long tradition for sport and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which happened at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU. In the same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded a few years later in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), they were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (1-0 against Preston North End) and 3 successive league titles.
