Review of Huddersfield: A very large and historic market town situated in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the UK, Huddersfield is at present the 11th largest town in the United Kingdom, having a population of about 168,000 (2017). The town is placed roughly halfway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles south-west of Leeds and it is some 191 miles drive from London.

Huddersfield is within the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the most populous town in that borough. Huddersfield lies in the valleys of the River Holme and the River Colne and the confluence of these 2 rivers is to the south of the town near the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a primarily industrial town, recognized over the years for the manufacture of chemicals, textiles, wool, electric motors and sheet metal. The town was the scene of significant unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group called the Luddites, in fear of losing their jobs as a result of greater mechanisation, destroyed mills and machinery and even went to the extreme of attacking and killing textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Despite the predominance or manufacturing the biggest employer in the town nowadays is the University.

The area has been settled for upwards of four thousand years, beginning with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane). Huddersfied was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was called Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a long tradition for sport and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at Huddersfield's George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). In the same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded 13 years later in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 (at Stamford Bridge) and 3 league titles on the trot.
