Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane). Huddersfied was listed in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was referred to as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a long tradition of sporting excellence and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which took place at the George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the Rugby Football Union in a row over the payment of players. In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded some years later in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town won the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and were also famous for winning 3 league titles on the trot.
