Huddersfield a Quick Guide: A large and historic market town situated in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the UK, Huddersfield is currently the UK's 11th largest town, being home to a population of close to 168,000. Huddersfield is placed about halfway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles south-west of Leeds and is some 190 miles distance from London.

Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane). Huddersfied was recorded in the Domesday Book (written in 1086) where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a proud tradition of sporting excellence and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which took place at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded some years later in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and were also famous for winning 3 successive league titles.

The Huddersfield area has been the birthplace of a number of well known Huddersfield including James Mason, former PM Harold Wilson, athlete Derek Ibbotson and Chris Balderstone (footballer and cricketer).
