Review of Huddersfield: A huge and historic market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom, Huddersfield today is the UK's 11th largest town (not including cities), having a population of close to 168,000 (2017). The town of Huddersfield is positioned about midway between Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and it is 190 miles driving distance from London.

Huddersfield is included in the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the most populous town in this borough. Huddersfield sits in the valleys of the River Holme and the River Colne and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town beside the University.

Huddersfield is a chiefly industrial town, widely known over the years for the manufacture and production of chemicals, electric motors, textiles, wool and sheet metal. The town was the scene of some unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when Luddites, frightened of losing their livelihood owing to more and more mechanisation, damaged machinery and mills and even went as far as murdering mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Despite the predominance or manufacturing and industry the largest employer in Huddersfield today is the University.

Huddersfield has been settled for over four thousand years, starting with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack. Huddersfied was mentioned in the Domesday Book (written in 1086) where it was referred to as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a proud tradition for sport and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which happened at the George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (1-0 against Preston North End) and were also famous for winning 3 successive league titles in the 1920's.

The town has been the birthplace of several well known Huddersfield including Derek Ibbotson, Chris Balderstone, James Mason and former Prime Minister Harold Wilson.
