Huddersfield a Potted History: A historic and huge market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, In the UK, Huddersfield today is the UK's 11th largest town, boasting a population of approximately 168,000. Huddersfield is positioned halfway between the cities of Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and it is some 190 miles drive from London.

Huddersfield is included in the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the most populous settlement in that borough. It stands in the valleys of the rivers Colne and Holme and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town adjacent to the University.

Huddersfield is a chiefly industrial area, renowned over the years for the manufacture and production of textiles, wool, chemicals, electric motors and sheet metal. It was the scene of much violence and unrest during the Industrial Revolution when a group of weavers called the Luddites, in fear of losing their jobs thanks to increased mechanization, demolished mills and machinery and even went to the extreme of attacking and killing textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. The area has been settled for upwards of 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane) and a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was documented in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was called Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The town has a proud tradition for sport and is where Rugby League was born, which occurred at the George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs split from the Rugby Football Union in a dispute over players being paid. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and presently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and were the first English club to win three league titles on the trot.

The Huddersfield area has been the birthplace of various noteworthy Huddersfield including athlete Derek Ibbotson, former Prime Minister Harold Wilson, film actor James Mason and footballer and cricketer Chris Balderstone.
