Huddersfied was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was called Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The town has a long tradition for sport and is where Rugby League was born, which occurred at Huddersfield's George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). In the same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and presently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), they were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (at Stamford Bridge) and were the first English club to win 3 successive league titles in the 1920's.
