Review of Huddersfield: An immense and historic market town situated in the English county of West Yorkshire, UK, Huddersfield today is the United Kingdom's 11th largest town (not including cities), being home to a population of somewhere near 168,000 (2017). Huddersfield is positioned midway between Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles north-east of Manchester and is 190 miles distance from London.

Huddersfield is within the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the most populous settlement in this borough. Huddersfield lies in the valleys of the River Holme and the River Colne and the confluence of these two rivers is just to the south of the town near to the University.

Huddersfield is a primarily industrial area, famous over the centuries for the manufacturing of chemicals, textiles, sheet metal, wool and electric motors. It was the scene of considerable unrest and violence during the Industrial Revolution when a group of weavers called the Luddites, fearful of losing their jobs because of increased mechanisation, demolished mills and machinery and in some cases even attacked and killed mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Despite the predominance or manufacturing the largest employer in the town nowadays is the University.

The Huddersfield area has been settled for more than 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane). Huddersfied was recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was identified as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

Huddersfield has a proud tradition for sport and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which took place at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the Rugby Football Union in a disagreement over the payment of players. In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded a few years later in 1908 and currently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), they were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and were also famous for winning 3 league titles on the trot.
