Huddersfied was noted in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was called Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

Huddersfield has a long tradition of sporting excellence and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which happened at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU in a dispute over the payment of players. In the same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded soon after in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (1-0 against Preston North End) and 3 successive league titles (1923-1926).
