Huddersfield a Brief Guide: An immense and historic market town situated in the English county of West Yorkshire, In the United Kingdom, Huddersfield today is the UK's 11th largest town, boasting a population of around 168,000 (2017). The town of Huddersfield is positioned halfway between Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles south-west of Leeds and 28 miles north-east of Manchester and it is 191 miles away from London.

Huddersfield is part of the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the largest town in this borough. It lies in the valleys of two rivers, the River Holme and the River Colne and the confluence of these 2 rivers is to the south of the town beside the University.

Huddersfield is a largely industrial area, recognized over the centuries for the manufacturing of electric motors, sheet metal, textiles, wool and chemicals. Huddersfield was the scene of much violence and unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group of textile workers known as the Luddites, afraid of losing their livelihood thanks to greater mechanization, destroyed mills and their machines and even went as far as attacking and killing mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Regardless of the predominance or manufacturing and industry the largest employer in the town at present is the University.

The Huddersfield area has been the site of settlements for more than 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane). Huddersfied was documented in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was referred to as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a proud tradition in relation to sport and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which happened at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded a few years later in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), they won the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and also won three league titles on the trot.
