Huddersfield a Brief Guide: A historic and large market town situated in the county of West Yorkshire, England, UK, Huddersfield is presently the UK's eleventh largest town, boasting a population of somewhere near 168,000 (2017). The town is positioned about halfway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and it is 190 miles driving distance from London.

Huddersfield is included in the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the largest settlement in that borough. Huddersfield stands in the valleys of two rivers, the Holme and Colne and these two rivers meet to the south of the town close to the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a largely industrial town, recognized over the centuries for the manufacturing of sheet metal, chemicals, electric motors, textiles and wool. Huddersfield was the scene of significant unrest and violence at the time of the Industrial Revolution when the Luddites, fearing the loss of their jobs as a consequence of greater mechanization, damaged weaving machinery and mills and even went as far as murdering textile mill owners. The Huddersfield area has been the site of settlements for upwards of 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane). Huddersfied was documented in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was referred to as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a long sporting tradition and is where Rugby League was born, which occurred at Huddersfield's George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded soon after in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), they won the FA Cup in 1922 (at Stamford Bridge) and were the first English club to win 3 league titles on the trot.

The area has been the birthplace of a number of well known Huddersfield such as Hollywood actor James Mason, Derek Ibbotson (athlete), Chris Balderstone (footballer and cricketer) and former Prime Minister Harold Wilson.
