Huddersfield a Short Guide: A historic and large market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, United Kingdom, Huddersfield is presently the eleventh largest town in the UK, boasting a population of around 168,000 (2017). Huddersfield is placed about halfway between Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and is 191 miles distance from London.

Huddersfield is within the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the largest settlement in that borough. It lies in the valleys of two rivers, the River Colne and the River Holme and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town near the University.

Huddersfield is a primarily industrial area, widely known over the centuries for the manufacture and production of wool, textiles, electric motors, sheet metal and chemicals. The town was the scene of much unrest during the Industrial Revolution when a group called the Luddites, fearful of losing their livelihood thanks to ever increasing mechanization, demolished machines and mills and even attacked textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. The Huddersfield area has been the site of settlements for over 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane). Huddersfied was recorded in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was called Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The town has a proud tradition for sport and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the RFU. Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 and were also famous for winning three successive league titles in the 1920's.
