Huddersfield is a chiefly industrial area, renowned over the years for the manufacturing of electric motors, chemicals, sheet metal, wool and textiles. The town was the scene of much unrest during the Industrial Revolution when Luddites, fearing the loss of their jobs thanks to ever increasing mechanisation, destroyed mills and their machines and in some cases even attacked and murdered textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane) and a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded 13 years later in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), they were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and also won 3 successive league titles.
