Huddersfield has a proud tradition with regards to sport and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at the George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield won the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and 3 successive league titles (1923-24, 1924-25 and 1925-26).
